In recent years the livestock sector has been hit by a number of high-profile
diseases, such as BSE, Foot and Mouth Disease and Avian Influenza. These have had a devastating
economic impact on livestock producers and the broader livestock industry. One key response has
been a growing interest in livestock disease insurance. However there is a need for greater
understanding of private incentives, market impacts, and public policy perspectives on regional,
national and international levels, if livestock insurance products and complimentary risk
management programs are to be developed. This book provides a balanced and broad-ranging overview
of the economics of livestock disease insurance. |

In bringing the chapters on macro-minerals up-to-date, calcium and phosphorus are treated
separately to acknowledge their distinctive metabolism outside the skeleton and new treatments,
such as the use of acid diets for milk-fever, are described.

This new edition, published in its second edition in 1981, adheres to the
framework laid down by the late Professor Underwood, but has been thoroughly revised by Neville
Suttle. It begins with three chapters of general introduction on the physiological need for
minerals, dietary sources of minerals and the principles governing detection of deficiencies.
Several advances in the assessment of mineral availability are described and claims for enhanced
availability for new chelated sources critically reviewed. The chapter on detection includes new
physiological and biochemical definitions of the marginal band between a deficient and normal
mineral status to improve the precision of diagnoses. |

Recently, the first 'zoopharming' product has reached market approval: it is a
recombinant human protein for medical use that is produced in the milk of transgenic goats. In
addition, other transgenic animals, including faster-growing salmon and environmentally 'friendly'
pigs with reduced levels of phosphate in their faeces are awaiting regulatory approval. These are
only some examples of upcoming applications of genetic engineering in farm animals. Other potential
applications include traditional breeding goals such as higher milk or meat yields, leaner meat,
and disease resistance. While genetic engineering in livestock opens a huge range of possibilities,
it also brings about concerns of safety and justification: does genetic engineering affect animal
welfare? Is it safe and morally acceptable to apply genetic engineering to farm animals for the
various purposes that are envisaged? It is against this background that the Europaische Akademie
GmbH and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften addressed the topic of transgenic
farm animals in an interdisciplinary symposium in 2007. |
Organized in eight free standing chapters which include case studies, a glossary and an
epilogue, this arrangement leads readers progressively through the events and decisions underlying
the present US and global animal health policy status, lays out challenges facing the US and other
nations, describes the components of a credible and competitive animal health infrastructure, and
puts forward strategies for achieving policies that are adaptable to global and domestic dynamics
while addressing the multiple issues and interests bearing on animal health, animal welfare, and
food safety. The case studies contain background information and questions for group
discussions.

Global Livestock Health Policy is designed to provide an understanding of the complexities of
national and subnational animal and public health policies and how those policies impact domestic
livestock industries. These policies shape domestic disease control programs, international trade,
and food safety efforts.
This book offers public policy makers and animal health officials in government and industry a
foundation on which to institute scientifically sound national and subnational animal health
programs; solidify infrastructures; enhance communication between legislators, regulators, and
affected parties; and expedite international agreements for safe worldwide movement of animals and
animal products in a global free market economy.
The book is intended for use by animal health officials; agribusiness leaders; commodity groups;
financial institutions; legislators and their staffs; importers and exporters of animals, animal
products, biologics and pharmaceuticals; leadership of the regulatory, academic and diagnostic
sectors of the agricultural and veterinary communities; consumers; or anyone else interested in
protection, production, processing, and distribution of animals and related products.

The idea that current methods of food production are not sustainable in the long-term is a
controversial topic. This book provides information that will advance a form of livestock
production that meets the long- and short-term goals of human food production, minimizing
degradation of natural resources. Important concerns regarding food safety, particularly antibiotic
and chemical residues in meat, milk and other livestock foods, have stimulated renewed interest in
alternative methods of promoting livestock health.
Alternative Health Practices for Livestock is the first compilation of its kind for
veterinarians, agriculture extension educators and livestock producers. It provides a
well-referenced overview of some of the alternative livestock practices currently being
examined.
Key Features:
- A much needed information source on alternative health for large animals
- Contributions from veterinarians, farmers, extension educators and university
professors
- Discusses the necessity for more validated scientific assessments of alternative and herbal
therapies in livestock production
- Includes chapters on ways to promote alternative methods of health care for livestock,
including steps to obtain research funding.

Cattle play a fundamental role in animal agriculture throughout the world. They
not only provide us with a vital food source, but they also provide us with fertilizer and fuel.
Keeping reproduction levels at an optimum level is therefore essential, but this is often a
complicated process, especially with modern, high yielding cows.Written in a practical and
user-friendly style, this book aims to help the reader understand cattle reproduction by explaining
the underlying physiology of the reproductive process and the role and importance of pharmacology
and technology, and showing how management techniques can improve reproductive efficiency. This
edition includes: Recent research findings on the physiology of the oestrous cycle and its control;
New techniques for monitoring and manipulating reproduction, including pregnancy diagnosis and
embryo transfer; Advice on identifying common infertility problems and how to prevent and treat
them. Reproduction Cattle 3e is essential reading for veterinary and agricultural students, as well
as veterinarians and farmers involved in cattle reproduction. |

There are tremendous benefits to feeding ruminants nitrogen and phosphorus
supplements, in terms of milk production and productivity. However, what goes in must come out.
Nitrogen and phosphorus excretions from dairy cattle are a major environmental pollutant. This book
describes the latest knowledge in nitrogen and phosphorus nutrition of cattle including
requirements, ruminal and total tract metabolism, possibilities of increasing the efficiency of
nitrogen utilization and reducing nitrogen and phosphorus excretions from dairy and beef
operations. It also includes aspects of the effects of dietary nitrogen and phosphorus on the
reproductive efficiency of cattle. This book will be of interest to researchers in animal
nutrition, animal science, and environmental (pollution) science. |

This practical guide is a tool designed for graziers to use in their day-to-day
decision-making about livestock nutritional needs, feeding options, condition and health. Pasture
supplements are expensive and should not be wasted, yet under-nutrition has an even greater
economic effect resulting from low conception and progeny survival rates, poor growth rates,
failure to meet market targets and tender fleeces in sheep. Supplementary Feeding of Sheep and Beef
Cattle shows how to get the nutritional balance right and avoid costly repercussions from incorrect
or inadequate feeding. The key topics covered will be particularly useful in drought situations,
but also in seasonal pasture shortages, when the nutrient value of pastures is low. Practical
tables and worksheets are provided as key tools, enabling livestock producers to make timely and
cost-effective decisions about supplementary feeding. |
